Bi-Folding Doors

Frequently Asked Questions

Here is our advice in answer to your questions. Please be assured that we take the strain throughout the process.

Our objective is to provide a beautifully designed, slim section folding sliding door which can easily be installed in competent hands. By following our simple assembly instructions you, your local tradesman or our own installers will be able to install the doors with confidence. Just place your order and in four weeks we will deliver to your door anywhere in the mainland UK. We are happy to talk you through the steps from first contact to completion to ensure your satisfaction so phone calls, e-mails, skype, twitter or facebook are welcome, nothing is too much trouble.

It’s never easy making a complicated choice to improve your home. That’s why we have a simple design tool to walk you through the process of choosing your bi-folding doors. So no matter how wide your opening, how many doors that you need, if they should open in or out or left or right we are here to help you.

What sizes do you make?

We offer:
Widths from 1500mm to 5400mm.
Heights to a maximum of 2600mm.

If you know your size you can get a price instantly using our bi fold door configurator. Alternatively just browse the options and sizes available in the bi fold door range. Please call us if you’re looking for doors outside these dimensions.

What type of arrangement should I choose?

Consider the geography of your home.
Most of our customers choose outward folding doors as these do not use up valuable internal space when folded back. Left or right folding will depend on the space you have available on either side of your room or the geography of your garden. You may also opt to split certain configurations centrally and push the doors to each side.

What is a master door or traffic door?

Useful if you’re planning to use your new doors as a ‘back door’.
The ‘Traffic Door’ or ‘Back door’ is offered with most configurations other than 4 and 6 door ‘all folding’ formats. A traffic door is a single or pair of doors hinged for ease of access. These doors have ‘D’ handles and a profile cylinder deadlock accessible from both inside and outside. So in most instances you can choose all folding or may want one fixed (hinged) door on one side of your opening with the doors sliding to the opposite side. You can then use this door to enter or leave the room without operating the remaining doors.

How should I go about measuring up?

Height: When measuring the height of the prepared aperture remember to allow for any cill, flashing or threshold you plan to fit underneath. Height should be measured from the surface the lower track will actually sit on. Measure at both sides and in the middle and provide us the smallest measurement.

Width: Measure in several places and provide us with the smallest measurement.

Are the top, bottom, and sides straight? If not we need the smallest dimensions.

Whether you’re building a new opening or using an existing one read our brief measuring up guide.

What type of Glass is specified?

Designed and specified to keep you warm and cut heating bills. The latest and highest standards and performance are our mantra.

28mm sealed glazing, argon filled toughened glass units have a U value of 1.2. Conscious of your safety our glazing is designed to meet and indeed exceed British Building Regulations. Each sealed double glazed unit used across our range of doors is manufactured from toughened safety glass to BS6206. This is significantly stronger than normal glass but critically in the unlikely event of a breakage it will shatter into harmless fragments. An inert gas, Argon, fills the units thus improving insulation and reducing heat loss. With a U Value of 1.2 you’ll be well insulated from the heat of high summer and the cold in the depth of winter. The glazing and system complies with Part L of Building regulations which covers thermal efficiency.

Are there any standard accessories?

You’ll find our doors well specified.
We fit trickle ventilation to the door set to meet with normal room ventilation requirements. We also have neat cylinder magnets designed to hold the doors neatly stacked when folded back.

What colours are available?

We apply the latest coatings to ensure an almost perfect long lasting finish.
Powder coating is the very best finish to apply to your folding doors. The thermoset polymer of architectural grade creates a hard finish much tougher than ordinary paint so future maintenance is minimal with many years of attractive life. We offer the four most popular colours, simply : Black, Anthracite, Mid Grey, and White. Other colours from the RAL range are optionally available. RAL is a specialized polyester powder coating for aluminium and is tough and long lasting. If you have a special colour in mind let us know and we will be happy to quote.

95% of our customers choose Black (Ral9005), Anthracite (RAL 7016) or Satin White (RAL 9910) so we can hold the price of these finishes down. If you have a special colour in mind please call for a price. You can see some examples of the different colours available here.

Will you make matching windows and doors?

Yes
Please call us to discuss.

What type of handles are fitted?

Security is important.

Handles and accessories provide a suite of satin black architectural ironmongery as standard. Slim elegant modern handles and lock plates are provided both inside and outside the master door. Flush foldaway handles on the other doors internally assist in closure. When your doors are opened and stacked they are held neatly in place with magnetic cylinders. A chrome or black finish is available for the handles and this can be agreed immediately after ordering.

Do the bifolding doors meet British Standards?

Our Bi-folding doors have been tested and passed the severe weather ratings to BS6375 Part 1 Class C. 28mm sealed glazing, argon filled toughened glass units have a U value of 1.2. Naturally we test our systems to extremes, wind pressure, water pressure and gusting are three standard tests, all passed, so rest comfortably. Additionally to keep you warm the thermal polymide breaks in our system comply with the building regulations document ‘L’ which calls for ‘U’ values of 1.8 or better which our system easily exceeds.

How secure are your doors?

Security is important.
Our doors are glazed from the inside for enhanced security. There is no access to the glazing beads from the outside.

On each door there are three heavy duty powder coated aluminium hinges with tough stainless steel pins. Each door is framed using heavy duty angled extrusions at the corners locked into position to ensure a firm square frame.

The doors are built with an anti-lift mechanism which prevents the doors from being lifted off the track. Furthermore heavy duty shoot bolts are designed to fit exactly into the tracks, tightly securing the doors to the frame and protecting the doors against forced entry.

Security is a major consideration so we provide a high security 5 point locking system to the master door and shoot bolts between each intermediate panel.

High security Euro Locking Cylinders are used throughout Viva’s range of doors. These are the latest generation of cylinder locks with several layers of protection built in to guarantee protection against lock snapping, bumping, and other forms of lock attack.

Can you fit the doors yourself?

Designed with assembly in mind.
Yes the system is designed to be fitted by a competent D.I.Y. person with clear instructions. We do however offer an expert fitting service.

How should you prepare for a trouble free installation?

To ensure your doors are assembled in a trouble free manner in your prepared aperture:
Ensure the cill on which the track sits is flat and level.

The sides should be vertical. This can be checked with a long spirit level or plumb line.

Our doors are not designed to support your walls, ensure that the lintel will offer the support for the walls, roof and floor. This will also need to be level.

Leave the finishing and decorating until after the doors are installed. Viva recommend that you plaster up to the frame after it is fitted and sealed. Flooring should be laid after installation and butt up to the lower track. To assist in measuring up correctly for your new doors read our ‘measuring up guide’.

Additionally, should you require doors or windows removing prior to installation we’ll be happy to quote separately on this.
